Back pain is a debilitating condition, be it in the upper or lower area of the back. One solution which promises long term relief for upper back pain sufferers is to follow a simple exercise routine. Some easy exercise routines are available which one may do on their own. These could be found in books, dvds, online or may be recommended by a doctor. A key thing to remember is to consult a physiotherapist or a coach to figure out and learn an exercise routine based on ones’ unique condition. Once the plan is laid out and training has been received it might be possible to avoid gym and to do it at home as well.

Stretching exercises are usually very simple and effective for upper back pain. Physically demanding exercises would include arm as well as shoulder movement and one must stretch always stretch first. Some example exercises are given below.

•    Stand straight with feet shoulder width apart. Move the shoulders back and towards each other. Move the arms out to the side. Move the upper back forward. This helps in opening the ribcage and front and back spine muscles are stretched. This routine improves the blood flow, tones and strengthens the muscles and the result is relaxed body and reduced pain.
•    In another version of the above routine the arms may be stretched above the head to achieve as much of a flat upper back as possible. This results in a more effective and far reaching stretch for better relief.
•    Yoga is also effective for pain relief. Stress is one of the primary reasons for upper back pain. Yoga is especially helpful in this case, since it also encourages meditation, which leads to a more peaceful state of mind and relieves physical symptoms of discomfort as well. Yoga helps in prevention too. Yoga may be offered at your local gym or at a yoga only gym. Do seek a coach’s advice as to what kind of exercise routine will work best for you.

Local gym and sports centres’ listing may be found in the phone directory or online. It is always a good idea to avoid medication and costly physiotherapy sessions. If only exercise can help then this would be the best option available out there.
