Welcome to the new SF School Food Coalition website!
Posted on | September 1, 2009 | 4 Comments
The SF School Food Coalition grew out of a May 21, 2009 meeting at the Mission High School cafeteria, when over 60 people came together to learn more about the SFUSD school food program, and to brainstorm ideas and strategies for forging ahead with a vision for the future.
We are a group of parents and advocates committed to creating a school food program that connects student health, academic achievement and positive behavior to eating fresh, high quality and good tasting food from sustainable resources.
Our long-term plan focuses on the following values:
- Healthy school food as an investment in disease prevention
- Local, sustainable food procurement and seasonal menus
- Good tasting food that is culturally appropriate to the student body
- A joint effort of District administrators, City and County of San Francisco, community members, local businesses and philanthropists
- A food service operation that uses energy efficient kitchen and storage facilities, eco-transportation and logistics, recycling and composting

This is very exciting! Recently I heard a NPR propgram interview with a woman who proposed some of the same ideas as well as using recent culinary school graduates in need of jobs to take on the school lunch program and was contemplating getting in touch with her. Now that I know about the SF School Food Coalition, I want to become a member. Please let me know how I might get involved.

Thank you for your interest in the SF School Food Coalition! I agree that developing relationships with culinary schools, along with culinary programs at the high school level, would be an amazing component to a school food program. Hopefully this will be considered by SFUSD when the time is right.
